Spring Energized Seals, also known as Variseals or PTFE spring seals, are high-performance sealing solutions. They consist of a U-shaped PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or other high-performance polymer jacket combined with a specially designed internal metal spring. The spring provides constant energizing force, ensuring reliable sealing even under extreme temperatures (-200°C to +300°C), high pressure (up to 700 kg/cm²), strong corrosion, or vacuum conditions.
Unlike standard O-rings, spring energized seals offer extremely low friction, excellent wear resistance, and are ideal for industries such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, hydraulics & pneumatics, and food machinery. Below is an introduction to the four most commonly used types: Face (End Face), Axial, Radial, and Rotary.
Typical Applications: Pump faces, valve cover plates, reactor flanges, etc. Features: Uniform sealing force, suitable for static or low-speed rotation, with good compensation for axial misalignment.
Axial seals are similar in concept to face seals. They are installed along the axis direction and are used for pistons, cylinder heads, or applications requiring axial compression. They mainly withstand axial pressure for dynamic or static sealing.
Typical Applications: Hydraulic cylinder end caps, axial leakage prevention for reciprocating parts. Features: Easy installation, capable of handling higher pressure, with long-lasting spring compensation.
Radial seals are the most common type. They are used for radial gap sealing between a shaft and a bore (such as piston seals and rod seals). The sealing lip is perpendicular to the shaft axis and relies on radial tension for sealing.
Typical Applications: Hydraulic cylinder pistons, pneumatic valve stems, reciprocating shafts. Features: Strong radial sealing force, suitable for medium to high-speed reciprocating motion, excellent pressure and eccentricity resistance.
Rotary seals are specially designed for rotating shafts. They maintain effective sealing during high-speed shaft rotation, preventing lubricant leakage or contaminant ingress. The lip design is optimized for rotational friction.
Typical Applications: Motor shafts, pump rotating shafts, agitators, rotary joints, etc. Features: Low-friction design, suitable for medium to low speeds (up to 20 m/s), excellent resistance to high temperature and corrosive media.
Selection Tips for Customers:
With their “permanently energized spring” characteristic, spring energized seals significantly extend equipment maintenance intervals and reduce leakage risks. If you have specific operating conditions (temperature, pressure, medium, dimensions), please feel free to contact us. We can quickly recommend the best model and provide samples for testing.
Choosing the right spring energized seal is like giving your equipment an invisible protective suit!
